Was the printer set up with a hostname or an IP?

If hostname then it could be a DNS issue.

If IP... then could your firewall be blocking it except via VPN?

Have you checked the subnet/gateway of the printer?

I've seen something like this before where ranges of IPs are reserved for VPN...
