You are correct about the speculation. However, I am commenting more on
other posters lamenting that the Church tarnished BYU's reputation by not capitulating to the type of thinking I speculatively accused "PAC12'ers" of sharing.
If that is why BYU was kept out, I'm glad, despite not agreeing entirely with how the Church apporached Prop 8.
I probably agree more with your (speculative) thoughts on the wildcard nature of BYU being a bigger factor.
