Recruiting Stars Aren't Always Aligned
It is true that the recruiting services are becoming more accurate with their ratings of recruits. Four and Five star recruits have a much higher percentage of playing in the NFL than three star and below recruits. But there are relatively few four and five star recruits, and they are mostly gobbled up by the premier programs--Florida State, Alabama, Auburn, USC, Georgia, Notre Dame, Ohio State, LSU, Texas, Michigan, etc. The blue bloods of college football. Recruiting for the other teams in the P5 conferences, and what BYU needs to do better, is have better evaluation of the two-three star athletes, projecting what they can be instead of what they are. And then developing them. That is where Utah and even Utah State has been far superior in recruiting to BYU, and the evidence is the number of players in the NFL. Number of players on current NFL rosters: Utah-18; USU-9; BYU-6.

Unless you are one of the top 15 teams in the final recruiting ratings, recruiting class ratings are mostly meaningless. It is about talent evaluation, projection and player development.
