My take...
First, QB's. Is Mangum chopped liver? Hill is a transfer. Is that not a good thing? Does the staff not get some credit for creating an environment where these transfers feel at home? BYU has a difficult time getting the best LDS athletes because they have never, nor will they in the near future, play on the biggest stage in college football against the best competition week in and week out. WHY? They haven't had, or will they have a big conference affiliation. In addition, High School success by no means translates into college success. Look at Jake. Olsen never panned out either. Both had great physical skills. Jake is a mental case and Olsen was injury prone. Bummer for both.

If you are a big time recruit, holding offers form USC, UCLA, Texas, FSU, Oklahoma, etc., odds are you wouldn't have BYU at the top of your list either. It is what it is.

Second, the church values winning, but not the same way the fans do. True, they have stated lofty goals. Do I think they are achievable? No, not in todays environment. The money in the sport won't allow the best BYU team to achieve greatness. They can't even get a scheduling agreement with the ACC, SEC. Without this, NC talk is pointless. Without a big conference affiliation, NC talk is pointless. Again, it is what it is.

Lastly, while winning is valuable, from a exposure standpoint, core values held by the church trump winning. They want to win their way. Their way does not include a new stadium and large salaries for the coaches and staff at this time. Nor do I believe that will become "their way" in the future.

Since things are the way they are right now, maybe the question fans need to ask is, "Do I really want to be a fan of BYU football?" If the changes you want are not anywhere on the horizon, maybe you should find a new team?

Just my two cents.
