We know that this set of coaches have successfully taught assignment soundness
in the past.

Yes it is the coach's responsibility to teach proper fundamentals, but the responsibility for executing properly is ultimately on the players. I guarantee that they have been taught what to do. If it's not happening it's on them.

Look, I wrestled in the collegiate level under a very successful coach (his teams won national championships). We saw him for 2 hours a day at practice. We had a strength and conditioning program that we were responsible for carrying out. His contribution? At the beginning of the season he said, "If you want to be great, put in the work required. I'm not going to babysit you. You have to do the work. Every time you shirk, every time you do less than is expected, that's a negative. Every time you put in extra work, getting down the nuances of position and leverage, etc, that's a positive. If you allow the negatives to pile up you won't be successful. Nobody's perfect, but if the positive far outweigh the negative you'll be successful."

He wasn't a firebrand or even a particularly great motivator. He was laid back and likable. He worked us to death in practice. But our individual success ultimately depended on us.

Some of us were very successful. Some not so much (mostly because we weren't quite as talented as the guys who ended up on the mat on "game day"). But the team was successful and with very few exceptions, every guy put in the work.
