We have a coach in the Hall of Fame who won 72% of his games against a WAC/MWC kind of schedule. 27.7% of his games were against BCS/P5/Major teams and non BCS/P5/Major teams that finished ranked. He was 39-60-1 39.5% in these games. By all accounts that was a pretty impressive accomplishment.
Our current coach has posted a very similar winning pct. against a WAC/MWC kind of schedule. 39.8% of his games were against BCS/P5/Major teams and non BCS/P5/Major teams that finished ranked. He is currently 20-29 40.8% in these games.
To accomplish that 72% winning pct. our HOF coach recruited and developed many NFL caliber players, CFB award winners, and CFB HOF players. Bronco's success in those departments is very limited yet has been able to produce similar on the field results.
What is the difference? Missions primarily. In 1981 there were 21 RMs on the active roster. Today there are 74. Of the 38 guys who got drafted from the '80s teams, 3 were RMs. Meanwhile, Bronco has recruited exactly 1 consensus (rivals and scout) 4 star recruit who didn't go on a mission who finished their senior year. He is in the NFL. Bronco will be 1 for 2 after this year when Apo finishes.
To me, he develops players very nicely for the college game. However, because he chooses to focus his recruiting on RMs he's not going to get many guys to the NFL.
