We live in north Utah Co FYI...
Anyway, my friend played Fball at Snow and then transferred to Utah (not to play). He later graduated from the U and got an advanced degree from USU. He still cheers for the U but isn't obnoxious about it. He has a daughter who is a senior and now applying to colleges in the state. Here's where it gets interesting. He wants his daughter to go to the Y. If she can't get a scholarship at BYU, he actually wants her to go to Snow and then transfer to BYU after getting her associate degree. He is very firm on steering her from the U because of his own experience in observing what the student and general fanbase has become since he went there. And it's not just him, as expected, his wife is even more adamant than he is about it.
From what we've been told by media both social and traditional, Langi came to BYU because he and his parents wanted to increase their chances of surrounding him with good influences. I don't know if Langi's parents went to the U, but I'm sure this isn't the only instance of U grads out there steering their kids clear of their alma mater. I thought my friend's daughter's circumstance was very interesting to say the least.
On a personal note, my son is also a senior and applying to schools. I went to college day with him and went to the USU and BYU presentations. USU pitched their great programs and student life and how Logan "shuts down" on game day. My son is very interested one of their engineering programs but is applying to USU, BYUI and BYU. He will defer admission for the mission thing but I support him in whatever decision he makes. After hearing the "pump up pitch" from USU, I was anxious to hear BYU's pitch. It wasn't rah-rah at all but still very powerful. A current student stood up and said, "There's one reason I came to BYU: the honor code." That's basically all she said and sat down. Very different approaches by both schools. FWIW, I didn't attend the U presentation but it would have been interesting what their "carrot" was.
Anyway, loved your story and wanted to share a tidbit from a different angle.
GO COUGS!!!
