The movie is based on a short novel by Henry James, The Turn of the Screw. The story questions whether the two children are being possessed by a former governess and her lover, the groundskeeper of the estate, both of whom are dead. The question also arises whether the governess really sees the ghosts or whether she is going insane. It's filmed in black and white, and thus the cinematography adds to the creepiness of the mood.
