The program cannot afford to wait 3 more seasons
BYU did not go Indy out of some grand strategy, but because it had to do something drastic. Utah destroyed any hope that the MWC would become a major conference by leaving. BYU got shut out of the Big 12 expansions when TCU and WVU were invited, furthering weakening the MWC.

Indy is a high stakes, high reward proposition. BYU needs to win and make major bowls to progress. The 2010-2013 seasons have been little more than mediocre, records fattened by easy competition and lousy bowl games. This year, that has fallen apart as BYU has lost 4 in a row to G5 teams, none of whom were ranked. Not a single BYU opponent this season is even getting votes to be ranked, and yet they are getting embarrassed on the field.

This season is lost, although 8 wins and bowl win would raise back to the level of the past 4 years. That seems unlikely from a team that fell on its butt last night from the opening drive. Next season is a tougher affair given the schedule, and the only hope is that Hill comes back as good as new and doesn't get hurt again.

BYU cannot stay Indy once the ESPN contract expires, and why would they want to waste more money airing debacles like last night?
