instead of letting him play DE? adapt teh scheme to fit your athlete. Someone posted on here you won;t see TCU take a DE and move him back to lb, they and Utah take theri lbers adn move the to DE and their safeties,rb's to lber... and they use theri practies. and bowl prep and big leads to get theri threes and on down VALUable playing time. They don;t stop running their offenses adn defenses with the threes and fours...they run teh same stuff... ALL of that is coaching not talent.
