I don't think its necessarily him being too stubborn, but rather his inability
to think "outside the box".

Bronco's experience at BYU has been framed, in a profound way, by the Honor Code. I don't think he sees the Honor Code as a limitation necessarily, but I think that any coaching or personnel decision he makes is greatly impacted by how that decision interacts with the Honor Code and potential violations of the Honor Code. Thus, I think he'd be very hesitant to hire a non-LDS upcoming DC because of how that decision might lead to issues with the Honor Code.

Rose, on the other hand, has no issue recruiting non-LDS players or hiring non-LDS coaches because his experience at BYU doesn't seem to have been tinged by Honor Code infractions nearly to the extent that Bronco's has. Part of this is because the basketball team is less scrutinized, part of it is because it's easier to keep a handle on a dozen players than a hundred. Regardless, Rose seems to be far more willing to explore non-LDS options in the basketball program.

If Bronco could develop that attitude and get the administration to continue to give him greater flexibility in handling Honor Code infractions "in house" the way LaVell could, I think its possible to bring in an exciting hire at DC to shake things up a little.
