He is doing everything in practice at close to full speed. He is totally ready physically to play but his plan was to not play in the Blue/White game because "It would suck to get hurt in the blue/white game." So he is holding out as long as possible but he knows he needs one exhibition game to get in sync with his mates from the point before the tough Long Beach opener.
