the orthodox traditions have a lot of appeal, in my experience, to a certain
segment of westerners looking for a more "authentic" and/or "primitive" flavor of christianity that isn't (necessarily) laden w/all the historical/political baggage of the catholic church;
at least those are some of the reasons i've been given my american friends who have converted to the eastern orthodox traditions
