They never had access to the BCS "championship" either. But an undefeated MWC

team could easily make an New Year's bowl (undefeated BYU would definitely have made it this year), just as they could make a BCS bowl. You may recall that undefeated Marshall wasn't invited to a BCS bowl in 1999 -- much to BYU's chagrin -- so things haven't changed that much.
