This was a forced retirement. And his replacement was already the "real" head coach for two years prior. That is, Bowden had almost no football responsibilities. He was just a figurehead the last two years. Anyone watching the program would not have noticed anything different other than Bowden no longer drove around in a golf cart saying things like "dadgum"
