Fans now pay more of their money then ever before and feel more entitled to voice their displeasure. They shouldn't, but 4 decent seats to a game now cost about $300 and feels more like a professional environment (same reason NFL has jail cells in the stadium). The psyche of the fan is emotional and losing is already a big let down, but when you know you've also dropped a tangible amount of cash, it is really hard to keep your emotions in check. This goes both ways, the USC experience was amazing and everyone that scalped tickets were all saying it was so worth the money.
This is also one of the reasons players should be paid. You can't charge millions of dollars to fans and not adequately compensate those putting on the show.
