Seriously, it was something beyond just egotism (though it was some of that too--which isn't all too uncommon a thing among top level athletes).
Either way, mercurial is something you definitely don't want in a PG. But Matt was mercurial enough that tight management was in order whatever position he was to play. And his circus-dynamic shooting mechanics severely limited his consistency as a SG as well--so those who argue he was playing out of position at PG just aren't being honest with themselves or the situation.
And besides, Matt was always very up front about seeing himself as a "point guard." He was also up front with being unhappy when both UCLA & Rose switched him to 2 guard. His ardent fans seem to have a very short term memory on that--or sporadic deafness.
