I've never shot a .380. My wife's friend picked up a Ruger .380 last year and thinks it is pretty snappy (kick-wise) for a small gun. I have a Kimber Solo 9mm that my wife feels the same way about. I like the 9mm. The ammo is cheaper and it is a heavier round.
