The fastest way would be to assign seats and then board from the rear forward
but the airlines can't do that because the high paying customers with status want to board first.
I think the biggest advantage Southwest has is their no checked baggage fee. Less bags going into the overhead bins = faster boarding. Everybody is trying to carry on with the other airlines.
