I don't remember who said it, but I thought it was an article by CSN Bay Area, that this year the Giants were going to open up the purse strings and go after big free agents. I think they tried that. A video that Buster Olney put out yesterday mentioned how that whole thing is not what Sabey likes to do - get in a bidding war (he mentioned the Dodgers went in to the Lester sweepstakes primarily to drive the price up for the Giants). I think they're going hard after Shields, or maybe even Scherzer (even though they've publicly said they weren't going after him), but trying to keep it in the background.

Still, with Peavy signing today, who do they get rid of? They've got MadBum, Cain, Hudson, Peavy, and they've said Lincecum would be back in the starting rotation this year. They wouldn't trade MadBum or Cain, they just signed Peavy. I doubt they'd sign Peavy just to trade him, when one of the reasons he said he resigned was because of his relationship with Bochy. And unless we offered to pay for most of Timmy, I don't see him being good trade bait.

As for third, Panik has played a lot of short in the minors, so he would probably be able to handle third. That to me would lead to Duffy at second, but he needs to bulk up. I really don't like the idea of Arias or Adrianza as full time starter. With Pablo and Morse gone, we need some offensive spark.

And as for Buster, I see at least one more year of full time catching, with Susac gradually taking over. Posey just does such a good job with the pitchers. I could see Hector being used in a trade, although he does seem to do the best job catching Timmy.

I'm hoping they're working on something. Because I just don't see this team as currently constituted being able to do what last year's team did.
