Somebody out there keeps a running total running of the best all around sports programs. I think it was called the President's club. As a whole BYU does well in the rankings because we have a pretty good sports program. Below is a broad breakdown of a majority of our sports.
-Football is always good, not great. Winning seasons with always one embarrassing loss per year.
-Men's basketball is always strong with regular trips to the NCAA tournament
-Men's Volleyball is a top 25 program
-Baseball program is average
-Rugby is dominant....not sure they count rugby though
-Women's basketball has been good with a nice run into the tournament last year
-Women's volleyball may bring home more national championship hardware for Legacy Hall
-Softball is good....they made it to regionals last year
-Gymnastics is good....of course nothing like Utah, but we did make regionals
-Women's soccer is good....seem to be ranked ever year...I think
So from this general breakdown you can see that the BYU athletics program as a whole is better than half of the P5 schools out there. I would say even better than Utah's and TCU's (comparing apples to apples)...old MWC foes. On paper BYU has a ton of value however the problem when dealing with conference inclusion is "BYU would join, but.....they want X, Y and Z".
Juxtapose that with Utah and TCU before their invites where as "TCU will join. Period." Or "Utah will join and on our terms."
It is that "but" that has us outside still.
