RE: (Offensive) Coaching for BYU
You are right that there were many top notch coaches at BYU in the '70s and '80s under Levelle. You fail to mention that all but one of these were offensive coaches who came to BYU because of the innovative offensive philosophy. Correct me if I am wrong but the defensive staff under Levelle, who was a defensive guy all his life, stayed pretty much intact for 15 - 20 years. The only defensive coach to move on and up was Fred Whittingham who moved up to the Rams and then the Raiders. BYU played the same vanilla Dallas Cowboy, flex 4-3. cover 2 and played it well enough so the offense could outscore their opponent, most of the time. It's not like the defense and it's coaches did anything special or that Lavelle brought in any great and innovative, defensive-mind coaches. Let me know if I'm wrong in my assessment.
