Sounds like you live near people that are obsessed with BYU no matter what happens. If BYU were a dominating and winning program, perhaps they'd have less fuel, but they'd still snipe at the edges about the honor code violations or whatever.
I can't speak to your specific situation, but the excessive peeing for distance contest between some fans of the U and the Y seems to convey less about the universities and more about those fans.
