...and the shortness of the high school football season in Alaska. High School basketball gets a lot more attention from D-1 schools due to all the holiday tournaments and summer AAU tourneys. This is where D-1 recruiters spend a lot of their time. With basketball being an indoor sport there's a lot more opportunity to play all year round.
For football, a lot of recruiting is through summer camps and Alaska might be behind the times when it comes to individual kids travelling outside for the more high profile camps. We have an indoor sports dome that is open all year round but I think high school football up here is still a very seasonal sport and limited with exposure. College recruiters want to go to places where they can max out their opportunities to scout kids. Coming on an expensive and time consuming flight to Alaska to then have to drive all over the state to view a handful of kids with marginal D-1 athletic ability isn't going to be an attractive use of their resources.
