Mike Empey said, today, that when LaVell was coach,
and former players would drop by with their families, he would go out of his way to make the children/spouses feel welcome and appreciated. He would spend time with each child and made them feel special.

Empey says that Whitt is the same when former teammates drop by. The children know that dad played for BYU but they grow up also knowing that their dad and his children are always welcome up on the Hill. The boys attend the summer camps there, and the ALL Poly camp, where they run into Whitt who goes out of his way to chat with them, their sisters and their mothers.

The BYU coaches (Empey had high praise for 2J's recruiting effort) only come along when the boys are juniors or seniors in HS. Whitt has many years head start. If it comes down to Utah or BYU and everything else meets the boy's requirements, he will likely choose the program in which he feels most comfortable, and the coach that made him feel important since he was a child.
