Star power can have a big effect. Maybe it's not a fair comparison, but imagine what effect Steve Young vouching for BYU to an interested QB prospect would have. He retired nearly 20 years ago, but his celebrity and success are well known. If the football program involved the alumni more heavily, it could have big effects. It certainly couldn't hurt.
