If you look at % of LDS coaches and % of missionaries, Utah now looks a whole lot more like BYU of the 80's than BYU now does. I know of at least one instance where LaVell told a player that, in no uncertain terms, he (LaVell) did not recruit him (the player) to go on a mission. Can you imagine that happening today? It is a different time. And that doesn't even begin to get into how the honor code is a different beast now.
