RE: I think it all boils down to one main fault with Bronco.
To those that keep saying that Bronco has no personality, does not like fans, and only associates closely with those in his inner circle; have you ever actually met or had a conversation with him longer than 2 minutes? As somebody that actually does know Bronco, has had several long conversations with him over the past 7 years, and has seen him interact with people when all of the cameras are off; I can tell you that your assessment of him is way off from reality. Prior to my getting introduced and given the opportunity to get to know him, I would truly have felt the same way from watching his interviews on camera. I had complete respect for him, but I just thought that he was quiet, calm, wise, but a man of few words; but that was so far from what I experienced. I was able to watch a closed practice before I was introduced to him, and he was very into his practices, but with no real yelling, zero swearing or negative interactions with his players, was very loud when his players made a great defensive or offensive play, and was really funny in how he would joke around with the players to keep them upbeat. Instead of the stoic business type, he was more of the surfer, walked around without shoes after practice in the building, and spent a lot of time talking with us. He was charming,(my wife's words, in an easy to talk with manner of speaking) sincere, and looked you directly in the eyes when you spoke back. Instead of just pretending like he was listening, as many people in his position do with people like myself(a nobody); he listened intently and retained everything that I spoke with him about. I know that I have mentioned it in a prior post, but he was able to recall parts of our conversation, more than a year later. Again, to a person that has nothing to provide to the program outside of my support and season tickets; he really touched me by inquiring about these items that we had talked about in previous conversations. Many on CB are very knowledgable with many things BYU, but as for Bronco, it is sad to read about all of the criticism of his personality, from people that have no actual interaction with him and are going off of tv or second hand accounts. Am I biased now, because of my own personal relationship and several interactions with him? Of course, but I am also a realist, and would readily admit if this assessment was true. For those that were at camps, fan events, or other large gatherings, that have interacted with other coaches, but are upset because he didn't interact with you; how many people were there that you didn't go and introduce yourself to? He may not be the first to seek out everyone, but I promise you, that had you went and approached him; you would have had a very meaningful conversation with him. I have been to both small and large gatherings for BYU, and I have yet to see a single instance, where Bronco was not completely kind and open to talking to all that came up to him. I am not what one would probably say was part of his close inner circle, but I do know that he would call me friend and knows who I am. There are literally thousands of others, that would probably be more than willing to write their own similar experiences to mine, because of the kindness that he has shown them. Some of the greatest speakers, are camera shy, and do not like to speak with media. I can't blame him, because every single word out of his mouth is instantly searched for a way of being used for a story promoting negativity. I would probably want to use the fewest amount of words possibly in my interviews, as well, if I was going to be torn apart of saying something that could be misconstrued for something else. A side note, he is not the only BYU coach to be wrongly accused of not having a personality. Lavell Edwards, was heavily criticized by fans and media, for not showing any excitement on the sidelines, and for frowning. Of course, for those that have ever met him, and now especially in retirement, we are finding out how funny and what a great personality he has. Don't judge a book by it's cover or foreword written by someone else.
