I wasn't on food stamps but I got WIC assistance. We got a block of cheese and
a few gallons of milk a month.
Family of 6 on $28k a year (as a fellow) was pretty hard.
I figured I might as well. My kids needed the food, and there was absolutely no time for moonlighting as a fellow.
Besides I've SO paid that back many many times over by now.
We didn't eat $20/lb food but we did eat a lot of cheese.
