It's not that simple
He has to become proficient at balancing risk vs. reward. If the choice is between a check-down for 5 yards or busting a long one to the open side of the field, then he should run. If the choice is between getting an obvious 10 yards and getting out of bounds or hanging in the pocket when no one is open, he should run. If the choice is between a check-down for 5 yards or trying to muscle his way for 8 yards, he should take the check-down. If the choice is between throwing the ball away or trying to fight for 3 yards, he has to throw the ball away.

It's not as simple as "he needs to learn to stay in the pocket and go through his reads." His legs are a ridiculous weapon, and he shouldn't put them on the shelf. He has to understand, though, when it is better to let someone else move the ball and get hit, which is most of the time, with the exceptions being 1) 3rd down when his legs are a sure bet and by far the surest bet for a 1st, 2) when he can get to the EZ, and 3) when he can get a nice chunk with time to get OOB or slide.
