I think he did this better last year
In his own words he said he would slide every time he ran the ball unless there was a big opening, they needed a crucial first down, or if he was close for a TD. In those cases he would lower his shoulder for the yardage, but all other times would slide.

His injury last year didn't occur due to running more like a RB. It occurred due to a freak accident of a guy landing right on top of his leg from behind and snapping his fibula.
