BYU re-weights GPAs based on a couple of different factors:
1. They look at the school you went to. If your high school cranks out 50 kids with 4.0s every year and those who have come to BYU in the past haven't done well, your 4.0 is going to get downgraded. On the other hand, if a 3.7 puts you in the top 10 in your class and kids from your school have done well at BYU, you're getting a boost, maybe ahead of the kid in the first scenario.
2. They also re-weight for the difficulty of classes taken. If you're taking AP or IB classes, you're going to get a boost over someone who doesn't.
3. Extra curriculars matter.
In short, the old X GPA and Y ACT score isn't a reliable formula to determine who gets in and who doesn't.
