Nissan (eventually) extended their warranty to 80K miles, and set it to include damage resulting from the radiator-transmission cooler leak - so it covered the destruction of the transmission.

Seriously, you might look into making a retroactive claim on the warranty. If you have receipts and what-not, and if the car was within the new extended-warranty period, there is a decent chance they'd pay you.
