The internet absolutely took off during the years of my mission (1993-95.) Sure it was around at the time that I left, but it was not used by the mainstream and was not well-known. Cell phone usage also began to take off as cell phones became much smaller during those years. They moved from being large, clunky devices, to much smaller handheld devices.
