I could see that happening
But I don't think the SEC or ACC will do that. The teams that are a part of the 4 crossover rivalries between the two conferences are a big reason for the current set up. Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, and South Carolina all don't want 9 conference games on top of their traditional rivals - this gives them 5 home and 5 away games annually with 2 games remaining. If they want to continue to have 7 home games they would need both of those 2 games every year to be buyout games.

On the ACC side, GA Tech, Clemson, Florida State, and Louisville (with 9 conference game seasons) would have 9 conferences games plus their traditional rival, plus Notre Dame about every 3 years. Not a lot of rooms for extra games.

I think that one of the things we'll see in the near future is additional flexibility in scheduling given to the conferences where they are able to remove the divisions. Each team plays 2-4 traditional rivals within conference and the remainder of the conference schedule is rotated. The top two teams in the conference play in the championship. I could see helping all the Power 5 conferences except for the Big 12.
