sounds harsh, but I have gotten some terrible advice from professors. The usual, "I wouldn't pursue a career in that. X, Y, and Z is going to make that field obsolete." Fortunately, I ignored it. The best professors I had got into the academia game late after a professional career in whatever fields they specialized in.
