Does anyone remember in 1998 when Utah was playing the basketball final
President Bateman, BYU's President at the time, wrote a story in the Daily Universe about rooting for Utah? His point was to put the rivalry aside and cheer for the community, if I recall correctly.

I vividly remember many of us BYU students/fans wondering how to part ways with our dislike of Utah and to root for them in the finals. Secretly, I doubt many wanted Utah to win.

I bring this up because a couple of Utah fans were asking who I wanted to win tonight. Personally, I wish they both could lose, but I chose the more politically correct reply and said, "I hope for a good game". In reply, I got the "it's best for the state of Utah if the Utes wins" talk. I recounted the story of President Bateman and both guys thought that was a cool deal by President Bateman to write the students about putting away the rivalry hate.

The subject quickly changed when i asked if it was BYU playing in the finals...
