Recent sucess helps...but, it's also about the direction that the program is
heading.

I have a lot of BYU football fans in my circle of friends and family. Many of them get frustrated with the constraints that BYU has to deal with to be successful. Obviously, there are a lot of things working in BYU's favor....large & passionate fan base, lots of talented LDS prospects that want to play at BYU, awesome football tradition, amazing stadium, etc.

However, there are also some very obvious things that cause huge frustration for BYU fans: how stringent to enforce the honor code, allocation of money / resources to put into the program, how much they are willing to pay coaches, not being in a conference and the challenges associated with being Independent, etc.

Both BYU and Utah have an identity. I'd argue (and most will agree) that BYU's identity is stronger...more established compared to Utah. Utah's success is fairly recent, but it seems to me that Ute fans have more reason to have hope compared to BYU fans. The Utes have had huge progress in the past 15 years. We see commitments being made by the athletic department that will likely bring to pass continued success and excitement to the program. Byu's level of "hope" has been significantly lower in the past 15 years. Not saying that there's not reason for BYU fans to have hope...it's just at a lower level than Utah in recent years.

The changes are slowly happening for BYU with regards to scheduling bigger / better opponents, but the process of going Indy and having a coach who comes across as boring / robotic has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.
