I think ESPN wants to broadcast games people will watch

I do not think they care about anything other than that. More viewers equal higher ad $$ revenues, which equal more $$$.

If you want to make an argument that ESPN thought getting BYU a P5 label would help them sell games better to viewers to increase viewership, I'd but it.

Otherwise, it is all about their bottom line.
