I can see marginal differences in your ability to preview and view the scene both backing into and backing out off a driveway/garage. I think it is a wash as far as safety of children is concerned. Personally, I think getting into my car in my garage and being able to look around, see what is both in my garage and in my driveway, and then backing out is as safe as backing into my garage without being able to check for children first. Either way you do it, you have to back your car through an area where there might be kids.
Corporate fleets, I am betting, are aware that backing into traffic is more likely to result in an accident than backing into a parking spot. On that basis, you might avoid collisions by parking "backward" at home.
Just my guesses, though.
