Many have pointed out that Povey had a couple things beyond his control going against him:
1) He had to play out of position as boundary corner--he wasn't great. He was, however, our best option at the time and usually did fine except when isolated vs. clearly superior athletes.
2) Relation to Howell--totally out of Povey's control but an albatross he carried throughout his career. Did he get an unfair advantage because of this? I don't know. I do know that Povey was more athletic than given credit as a safety and seemed to be pretty steady when allowed to play his actual position.
I don't see Povey coming within a mile of making an NFL roster but would certainly be stoked were he to pull it off. Whatever happens from here, he deserves credit as a guy who stepped up to fill a dire need for BYU and gave his level best, perhaps sacrificing his personal legacy as a player in the process. I wish the guy success in whatever comes next, whether football-related or not.
