You are supposed to work on them together
I have helped both of my sons, several nephews and more than a few neighbors build cars. When I help, I instruct, demonstrate, and then let them take over. I do not paint or assemble the cars. I do not believe that is cheating. BTW I have never had one of the cars I helped on finish lower than 4th place.
