I used to think this, too, but was persuaded by a baseball writer (can't
remember his name) who was interviewed on Ken Burns' baseball documentary. He said Babe Ruth was the greatest because (a) Ruth absolutely revolutionized the game and came on to the scene hitting 50+ HRs a year in an era where league leaders often had 10 or 15. But what sets Ruth apart from Mays is that before being sold to the Yankees, Ruth was one the best pitchers in baseball, too.
