It matters a lot for BYU. If BYU paid $1,800 it would not look good.
BYU needed to step up and pay what it did. And let's face it, if someone is picking between BYU and Utah, that's not exactly picking between BYU and USC. If someone is on the fence for other factors, it can't hurt.
