I have a 2x4 that I cut down on the table saw a bit so that it's more like a 2x3
so it fits my hand better. I've used a shovel handle, but there isn't much surface area on the end, and it doesn't do a very good job.
I don't put anything in the hole other than the dirt I dug out of the hole in the first place. If it's a corner post, I normally will put another post about 5 feet away along the fence line and put diagonal bracing in so that it doesn't move.
