I think that a lot of the anti-BYU stuff is just angry people who are projecting their frustration/anger/disillusionment/etc. for the church onto BYU athletics. When you sit down with a non-member in Utah and drill down to the real reason that they "hate" BYU, it often stems back to their feelings toward the Church or Mormon culture. I've heard reasons like somebody was mean to them in school, an LDS girl wouldn't date them in HS, they always felt marginalized, didn't get invited to a birthday party, etc. So now that they are adults and can do something about it they feel the need to go on the attack and vindicate their grievances.
