There are so many NFL draftees from Lavell's era that wouldn't
have made it at BYU today. On the flip side, Star would be at BYU because academics wouldn't have been an issue. Manti would have gone to BYU because drinking wouldn't have been an issue, half of the football team did it.

Today we are faced with a conundrum similar to Notre Dame's, only even more difficult to deal with (the honor code). They no longer get the creme de la creme because many guys don't fit their academic qualifications. Lou Holtz wasn't a better recruiter than Brian Kelly, he just could slide anyone in that he wanted. Today that isn't the case.

To answer your question: Yes, Lavell had better players because their essentially was no honor code for the football team and very little in terms of academic accountability.
