Your point has no factual support. Gonzaga does go after four and five star recruits--they just consistently lose those recruits to inferior programs in better conferences. This year alone Gonzaga made fourteen offers to national recruits. Of those recruits, one signed a LOI. That one recruit had no other offers. Thus, we can infer that, in the midst of one of its best seasons ever, Gonzaga did not win a single head to head recruiting battle with a P5 or MWC school.
Where did the recruits go that spurned Gonzaga? Some went to Duke and MSU, but two went to Washington, one went to Cal, one went to Oregon, one went to Oregon State, one went to SDSU, one went to Utah, and one went to TCU. So the point is not that Gonzaga is recruiting all different kids and winning recruiting battles. They are recruiting the same kids, losing recruiting battles, and then having great seasons because Mark Few coaches up a bunch of plan c's. I actually feel bad for Few and wonder what he could do at a place like UCLA.
Why are all these recruits choosing also ran programs over Gonzaga (the belle of the WCC)? Who knows, but it probably has something to do with the fact that most of Gonzaga's road games are played in obscure high school gyms against colleges that recruits have never heard of.
