Who knows until you start the searching and interviewing process. There are no guarantees in life. There are no guarantees that Bronco will ever win more than 8 games or that he'll ever beat Utah again. There's no guarantee that he'll even have a winning season next year, let alone go 8-5.
Did we know what kind of HC Bronco was going to be? Did we know he'd give us some exciting years early on when he was hired? Honest answer is *NOPE* we didn't know. BYU administrators dismissed him after his first interview bombed and they were ready to offer Lance Reynolds after Whitt backed out. If it wasn't for an 11th hour (and 59 minute) plea by a large number of defensive players marching into the AD's office asking him to give Bronco one more interview and chance at the HC job, we'd have seen Lance Reynolds follow Gary Crowton.
Bronco turned out to be a better than average HC, but he and his program have gotten a little stale, a little stagnant and have lost their sense of direction. His list of problems/deficiencies is well chronicled. If it's time for a change you don't let the fear of the unknown paralyze you from progressing and striving for excellence. It doesn't mean Bronco is a bad guy or a bad coach, just that his time has come and it's time for someone with a new vision to come in and re-energize the program. He's had a nice run and I don't know if he has any more tricks left up his sleeve (we'll see this year).
I've led or participated in 100's of interviews and thoroughly enjoy them because of the new things I learn about individuals that I never realized. It's an exciting process. Nobody knew how good or bad Bronco would be when he got the job, should we have let that fear of the unknown paralyze us into inaction and stay with the status quo back in 2005? Did we know before hand who Crowton's replacement would be? (we thought we did but he backed out).
The next great BYU Head Coach is out there somewhere just waiting to be discovered (and interviewed and hired)!!
