But I've also been told that in HK a big issue is also the airspace, similar to Pu Dong and Hongqiao in Shanghai. During the busiest hours, not only are their long waits for the runway, but planes can't take off because of a lack of safe airspace through which they can egress from the airport. Probably not as big an issue as the back-up caused by the runway issue, but still a problem. At least that's what i've been told.

As for the 3rd runway, I'll believe it when I see it. There is no space by the airport and there is talk of developing a nearby island to put it in, the approach and take-off routes aren't ideal. My guess is that we are a good 3 - 5 years away from seeing that actually come into existence.
